Worked example

To convert 175 centimeters, multiply by 0.01 to get 1.75 meters, the format used for height on passports, ID cards, and medical forms. The same step works for any value: 250 cm equals 2.5 m, and 8 cm equals 0.08 m.

Rounding and accuracy

Two decimal places suit almost every purpose, because each whole centimeter moves the result exactly one place in the second decimal position. Keep three or four decimals for lab measurements or machining tolerances where millimeter precision matters. Round once, after multiplying, never before, to avoid compounding small errors.
