From watts to dollars

An appliance's power draw is measured in watts, and electricity is billed in kilowatt-hours: 1,000 watts running for 1 hour is 1 kWh. A 100-watt bulb left on 10 hours uses 1 kWh per day. At $0.15 per kWh, that is $0.15 daily and about $55 per year for a single bulb.

The big hitters in most homes

Heating and cooling dominate, followed by water heating, laundry, and refrigeration. A space heater at 1,500 watts running 8 hours daily costs about $1.80 per day at $0.15/kWh — over $650 per year. A modern refrigerator runs around 150 watts but cycles, costing roughly $65 per year. The calculator shows both continuous and cycled loads.

Efficiency labels translate to dollars

ENERGY STAR appliances quote annual kWh, which converts directly to annual cost at your rate. Replacing a 15-year-old fridge that uses 700 kWh with a 350 kWh model saves about 350 kWh per year — $52 at $0.15/kWh, roughly the price of a new budget model every decade of use.

Lights: the cheapest win

Swapping a 60-watt incandescent for a 9-watt LED cuts the draw by 85 percent. At 3 hours daily, one bulb saves about 51 watts × 3 hours × 365 days ≈ 56 kWh per year — about $8.40 per bulb per year at $0.15/kWh. Across a whole house, lighting swaps pay for themselves quickly.

A worked annual table

The yearly cost of an appliance is watts × hours per day × 365 ÷ 1,000 × your rate. At $0.15/kWh: a 100-watt bulb on 5 hours daily costs about $27 a year; a 1,500-watt space heater on 8 hours a day in winter costs about $1.80 a day, or roughly $220 over three cold months; a 3,500-watt central AC on 6 hours daily costs about $3.15 a day; a 45-watt phantom load running 24/7 costs about $59 a year; a 3,000-watt dryer used 1.5 hours weekly costs about $35 a year. Compare rates and seasons

The same appliance costs very differently at different rates. A 12 kWh-a-day heater is $1.80 at $0.15/kWh but $2.64 at $0.22/kWh — a 47 percent jump. Seasonal rates, time-of-use plans, and tiered pricing all change the answer. Run the calculator at your actual rate, and if your utility bills by time of day, run the appliance twice: at the on-peak and off-peak rates to see whether shifting usage saves real money.

Common mistakes

Comparing watts without hours — a 1,500-watt heater that runs 1 hour costs less than a 300-watt TV on 6 hours. Forgetting that the label wattage is a maximum, not a typical draw; a fridge cycles on and off, and an AC runs harder in July than in May. Ignoring phantom loads, which are 24/7 regardless of use. And using a national average rate when your local rate changes the ranking of which appliance is worth replacing first.

Decision checklist

Scale from there — 1,500 watts for 1 hour is 22.5 cents, 3,500 watts for 1 hour is about 53 cents, and any appliance running 10 hours multiplies those by ten. This cent-per-hour lens turns every label into an immediate cost figure before you reach for the calculator, which then delivers the precise daily, monthly, and yearly totals.
