Fuel Trip Budgeting: Distance, Efficiency, and Price

Estimate the fuel cost of any road trip, compare vehicles by efficiency, and plan a realistic travel budget.

The basic math

Fuel cost equals distance divided by efficiency, times the price per gallon. A 300-mile trip in a car getting 30 mpg uses 10 gallons. At $3.50 per gallon, that is $35 — about 12 cents per mile. The calculator does this for any distance, efficiency, and price.

Efficiency varies with conditions

Real-world mpg is lower than the window sticker: highway speeds above 60 mph, headwinds, hills, winter fuel blends, and cargo all reduce efficiency. A loaded SUV towing a trailer can drop below half its rated mpg. Use a conservative number from your own average, not the sticker, for a realistic estimate.

Electric vehicles change the units

For EVs, the equivalent is miles per kWh times the charging rate. A 300-mile trip in a car doing 3.5 mi/kWh uses about 86 kWh; at $0.15 per kWh that is about $13 — often cheaper than gasoline, though public fast charging typically costs more than home rates.

Round trips and detours

Budget the round trip, not the one-way distance, and add margin for detours, wrong turns, and idling in traffic. Adding 20 percent to the fuel estimate covers the difference between the map distance and the distance you actually drive.

Compare before you drive

The calculator makes it easy to compare two vehicles or two routes: same distance, different efficiency or price. Use it to decide which car to take, whether a detour for cheaper gas is worth it, and what to set aside for the trip's fuel.

The per-mile lens

Expressing fuel as cost per mile makes comparisons easy: $3.50 gas at 30 mpg is 11.7 cents per mile; at 20 mpg it is 17.5 cents. Over 12,000 miles a year, the difference is about $700. The same lens works for an EV: 3.5 mi/kWh at $0.15/kWh is about 4.3 cents per mile.

Plan with a buffer

Set the trip fuel budget 15-20 percent above the estimate. Traffic, detours, temperature, and load all reduce efficiency, and a one-way estimate doubled for the return trip is the minimum. The buffer turns a budget from optimistic to usable.

EV vs gas on the same route

A 300-mile trip in a 30-mpg car at $3.50 gas costs $35. The same trip in an EV doing 3.5 miles per kWh at $0.15 per kWh costs about $12.86 at home-charging rates. Public fast charging can be double that, which narrows but rarely closes the gap on energy cost alone. The calculator accepts both units so the comparison is apples to apples — distance, efficiency, and price per unit of fuel.

Cost per mile as the decision lens

Expressing fuel as cents per mile makes every comparison legible. At $3.50 gas, a 30-mpg car costs about 11.7 cents per mile; a 20-mpg car about 17.5 cents. Over 12,000 miles a year, that is $1,404 versus $2,100 — a $696 annual difference. For an EV at $0.15/kWh and 3.5 mi/kWh, the number is about 4.3 cents per mile. The per-mile lens cuts through vehicle size and sticker price and goes straight to the operating cost.

Common mistakes

Using the one-way distance for a round-trip budget. Trusting the window-sticker mpg instead of real conditions. Forgetting that charging at public stations can cost far more than home rates. And planning without a buffer, then being surprised when traffic, hills, or a detour eats the margin.

Decision checklist

Set the true round-trip distance, plus 15 to 20 percent buffer. Use the real-world efficiency for the vehicle, not the sticker. Enter the actual price you will pay per gallon or per kWh — including public charging rates. Run both vehicles or routes side by side, read the per-mile cost, and budget the trip on the higher, realistic number.

Highway, city, and winter fuel

Efficiency is situational. A car rated 30 mpg combined may do 36 on the highway and 24 in the city; winter blend fuel and cold starts can knock another 5 to 10 percent off. A mostly-highway trip may beat the combined estimate, while a city-and-traffic trip will miss it. Tolls, parking, and wear

Fuel is the visible line item but not the whole trip cost. Tolls, parking, and vehicle wear (roughly 15 to 20 cents per mile for many cars) can exceed the fuel bill on a long trip. The calculator is a planning estimate, not a receipt. Real prices move week to week and efficiency shifts with conditions, so treat the result as the budget baseline and compare it with the actual fill-up after the trip. The gap between estimate and receipt is data: it tells you whether the efficiency input or the route assumption needs adjusting for next time.
