The fuel cost formula

Cost = distance ÷ efficiency × price per gallon. A 300-mile trip at 30 mpg and $3.50/gal costs $35 — about 12 cents per mile. The calculator runs the arithmetic for any distance, efficiency, and price.

Real-world efficiency

Sticker mpg is optimistic: highway speed above 60 mph, headwinds, hills, cargo, and winter fuel all cut efficiency. Using your actual observed mpg — not the sticker — makes the estimate honest. The calculator's efficiency input should be the real number.

Electric vehicle equivalents

For EVs, use miles per kWh and the charging rate: 300 miles at 3.5 mi/kWh needs about 86 kWh; at $0.15/kWh that's about $13, though public fast charging costs more. The calculator works in either unit system.

A worked example

A 600-mile round trip at 28 mpg and $3.60/gal: 600 ÷ 28 × 3.60 = $77.14. With a 15 percent buffer for detours and traffic: about $88.70. The calculator shows the base and the buffered number.

The same trip in a 40-mpg car costs $54 versus $77 in a 28-mpg car — the calculator makes the $23 difference explicit before you choose which car to take.
